If you love the outdoors you don’t let anything stop you from getting out into the beautiful Wisconsin countryside.  This weekend, the Montello Rod and Gun Club opened its grounds to fellow outdoor enthusiasts and hosted a sporting clay shoot for Adaptive Sportsmen, Inc.  Adaptive Sportsmen is a non-profit organization whose mission, according to its brochure is, “Our mission is providing outdoor recreational opportunities for physically challenged people.”

John Martinson, Second Vice President of the organization said, “Our members come from all over the state.  This is the first time we’ve had a chance to do sporting clays.  We try to keep costs low for our activities; many of our members are on fixed incomes.  The Montello club has been great.  They’ve supplied guns, shells, even fed us lunch.”

Adaptive Sportsmen is open to anyone who is physically challenged and who loves the outdoors.   Martinson said that hunting and fishing are only a couple of the many activities the group supports.  Kayaking, ATV riding, and archery are others that Adaptive Sportsmen participate in and arrange for members.

Montello Rod and Gun Club member Rudy Vesely arranged the sporting clay shoot in Montello.  Vesely has helped arrange a pheasant hunt in Oxford for several years for Adaptive Sportsmen.

It was a great fall day in Montello and the banging of the guns south of town was more than practice, it was sportsmen sharing a bit of fun and camaraderie while extending a hand of welcome to fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
